Purple Prose – Amethyst
In the early 90s I would host live shows at Standard (my record store). I would receive a number of press kits from bands that were on tour. I always looked forward to getting the mail and seeing what these bands would write in their bios. There was a feature in some indie music magazine (the name eludes me right now) called “Purple Prose”. It would feature the best of these horrendous bios. It was one of my favorite features in that magazine.
Amethysts’ bio was one I received that was so particularly horribly that I’ve kept it all of these years. I now share it with you.
This picture cracks me up! What are they looking at??!!

I wish that I had kept their demo.
The Concept:
Amethyst is not only a musical group, it is a philosophy. An ideal composed of five unique artists whose sole desire is to create music that is not only audibly pleasurable, but also fulfilling to perform- music that stretches the boundaries of creativity, abandoning the typical and cliche. Wearing their influences upon their sleeves, they transcend the scope of their contemporaries, creating a kaleidoscope of classical, jazz, caribbean, East Indian, and hard rock styles, without compromising for the commercial mainstream. Coupled with provocative lyrics and enchanting melodies, Amethyst makes their philosophy a reality by creating something that is truly unique.
On to the Next One – New Jay-Z Video
This video is awesome! It looks like it was directed by Mark Romanek, one of my favorite music video directors.
Although I can’t find out who the actual director is. Romanek worked with Jay-Z on the video for “99 Problems”. Here is an article on that colaboration.
The Damien Hirst Diamond skull ( For The Love of God ) getting paint ( or is it BLOOD!!!) poured on it is hilarious! ( obviously a rhinestone rip off ) . All the chatter of Jay-Z being a devil worshipper and a member of the Illuminati is also hilarious.

My friends Jason Bratton (luckyfish.tv) and Scott Schroeder (psyche-digital.tv) just sent me these PhotoShopped pictures they made from the first official still of James Camron’s Avatar. They are hilarious. The top one is the original. We are all very excited about the movie but as Jason said in his email to me “I think the (photoshopped) responses express the anxiety we both feel from the initial image.” Please don’t suck Avatar.

Que me worry?
I scored this sweet rendition of a Dia De Los Muertos Alfred E. Neuman at the Mad Magazine tribute show in East Atlanta last weekend. The Gallery in East Atlanta hosts great low brow group shows regularly in EAV (East Atlanta Village). The latest of these tackles one of my favorite retro memories, Mad Magazine. More Pictures after the Link.
